The Gov: rnor issued a proclamation in April 1899* defining the boundaries in which he stated:-

"The western boundary is 113 52 E. Long.

"The Southern boundary is 22° 9' N. Latitude"

The despatch was acknowledged but no notice was taken of

this proclamation or of its terms which of course are

not in accordance with the convention map. The local

people followed this proclamation in marking the position of meridian 1133 etc. and Major General

Gascoigne repeated it again in his map accompanying

his despatch confidential of 27th August 1902. discrepancy between this map and the War Office map .D.1393 passed unnoticed in the Colonial Office. Colony had I.D.1393 at the time. I may add that General Gascoigne's map does not show Tai A Chal at all. The I.D.map shows it but also shows that its S.W.tbp is North of 22° 9' N.Latitude; it therefore makes another

alteration of the boundary as shown in the convention map which has passed quite unnoticed.

Still as the line

runs from the S.W.tip of Lantao through the S.W.tup of Tai A Chat to the Latitude 22° 9' N. it carries out

the intention of the convention map.
